Biography of Valerie Borgal

God has blessed me with my art abilities and I desire to use them for His glory and to uplift those who view my work. I have been interested in art since a young child. My parents encouraged me and gave me a chalkboard for my bedroom. One day my friend was over and she stuck out her tongue. I asked her to hold that pose and she did. I quickly sketched her on the board. We both looked at it and got a good laugh as it looked just like her.
Graduating from Wilmington High as a 4 year art major, my goal was to teach art. I applied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School of Art and Design and entered the 2nd year because of my previous experience in high school. I graduated in 1967. I married and had my family. For 10 years my art was on hold. I started up again after joining the Tewksbury Art Guild and signed up for a watercolor workshop they offered out at the Livingston St. field across from the old farmhouse. From that day until now, I have been hooked on watercolor. I started taking classes in Andover and workshops with Bette Wasserboehr. After Betty died, I went on a search out to Rocky Neck for my next teacher. I went from gallery to gallery looking for a technique I liked and wanted to learn. When I walked into Paul George’s gallery my first question to him was, “Do you teach?” I have been taking workshops and classes with him since then.
Over 30 years later, I am still learning the medium and what I can accomplish with it. It is a never ending process of learning. It fascinates and intrigues me as the colors and water mix and blend.
I work in the following media:
- Watercolor on paper and watercolor with mix media using pen and ink, wax-resist, and crinkle art on mesa paper.
- Drawing with graphite and pen/ink and scratchboard
I teach basic drawing and watercolor classes, and have had workshops in watercolor and wax-resist and demos in watercolor, graphite, portraits, and pen and ink stippling method.
While teaching 2nd grade and kindergarten at Fellowship Christian Academy from 1982 -1996, I also taught art to the first -12th grade. I taught drawing at the Wilmington Art Center for 7 years and classes at the Tewksbury Senior Center and private classes.
My art is representational of the life that surrounds me. I try to capture the essence of the many subjects in different media, my favorite being watercolor.
